Can NM cable be installed unprotected in kitchen cabinetry for outlets and controls? I?ve been looking through 210 & 334 and it appears it can.

I kinda go back and fourth on my personal opinion on that matter. I've certainly run NM in cabinets. I can also say that I've never observed properly installed NM cable having been damaged in vintage installs. I prefer to run EMT or FMC when time, the budget, and the customer permit.

All depends on the AHJ's idea of Protection from Physical Damage is taken... no?

SF, and a few other local parts of the Bay Area - Subject to physical damage is exposed below 8' - but will cut you some slack in feeding under cabinet lighting - but say "IN" the cabinet where things are to be stored - it would need to be protected by something... When I do it here - I have the Cab guys install little soffets or false panels to cover it.

Hillsborough - mega million wanna be gated City to the south of here - NM is not even allowed at all - raceway methods only! Due to their "Rat Problem"...

I usually shield it with Carr Flex or Wire Mold. Sometimes I take the metal out of the wire mold and put the wire mold over the NM and strap it with Saddle wire mold straps. The reason I usually shield it is you never know what the HO or there kids will do. If I don't shield it I strap it so it doesn't hang down so that what's in the cabinet when pulled out doesn't catch on it. Also I have seen pet's go in the cabinet's. I like to have peace of mind that I have done the best install I could do for any circumstance. Semper Fi. Buddy
