Only if the nail both supports and secures the NM. Just laying it on the nail does not meet the requirements of the rule. It would be difficult to secure the NM with a nail and not damage it.

Art 334.30 ......shall be supported and secured by staples, cable ties, straps, hangers, or similar fittings designed and installed as not to damage the cable. I guess my question to this is "similar fittings designed" what does this mean?? As an inspector I could not accept this and would red tag it. Your thaught on this, please.

That was what I was saying in my post. A nail is not approved for the purpose, however, it probably isn't that big a deal as long as it does its job. For me the staple is basically to hold the cable in place. I don't see why a nail won't work but I agree I don't believe it should be code compliant.

I'm not sure but the CMP stated in this code cycle that there is no requirement that support hardware be listed. I don't see any real issue as long as the NM in not damaged and is secured and supported.
