I've often wondered about that when I see the plumber's holes. They must have an exception for the slivers left on either side of the drain pipes.

2003 IBC (commercial)
2308.9.11 Bored holes. A hole not greater in diameter than 40 percent of the stud width is permitted to be bored in any wood stud. Bored holes not greater than 60 percent of the width of the stud are permitted in nonbearing partitions or in any wall where each bored stud is doubled, provided not more than two such successive doubled studs are so bored. In no case shall the edge of the bored hole be nearer than 5/8 inch (15.9 mm) to the edge of the stud. Bored holes shall not be located at the same section of stud as a cut or notch.


2003 IRC (residential)
R602.6Drilling and notching.studs.Any stud in anexterior wall or bearing partition may be cut or notched to a depth not exceeding 25 percent of its width. Studs in nonbearing parti-tions may be notched to a depth not to exceed 40 percent of a single stud width. Any stud may be bored or drilled, provided that the diameter of the resulting hole is no greater than 40 per-cent of the stud width, the edge of the hole is no closer than 5/8 inch (15.9 mm) to the edge of the stud, and the hole is not lo-cated in the same section as a cut or notch. See Figures R602.6(1) and R602.6(2).
Exceptions:
1. A stud may be bored to a diameter not exceeding 60 percent of its width, provided that such studs located in exterior walls or bearing partitions are doubled and that not more than two successive studs are bored.
2. Approved stud shoes may be used when installed in accordance with the manufacturer.s recommenda-tion.
Don't forget 310.15(B)(2)(a) and the table.

Would not Exception # 3 apply? Surely the length of the path through the stud (as seen by the conductors) would be less significant than a 24 inch path through a nipple.

Actually, the hole can be as large as you want to make it as long as the inside of hole is not larger than the outside of the hole. :confused:

Alright Wayne, So I'm a little jealous. You mean you never looked at the big ol' bores they can make and wished you had a reason to do that. :D
