NM cable

Is there any code reference against using NM in a steel butler type building? I do not mean using plastic sleeves in metal studs, just open wiring.

Take a look at 334.10. It's pretty restrictive.

It’s done around here all the time. By both farmers and licensed electricians. As long as the runs follow the boards and are secured properly, it makes for a neat installation.

Whether it’s code-compliant or not may depend on the use of the building.

Attachment can be a pain but as long as type of use of the building doesn't otherwise prohibit NM cable it is fine.

Keep in mind that in other than dwellings, NM cable generally must be behind a 15 minute finish as well.
