I am working on a commercial job (restraunt), the space above the drop ceiling is not being used for environmental air purposes. Above the grid work there is 5/8 sheetrock that is fire taped and unpainted, the AHJ told me that it's acceptable to wire the 2x4 troughers with NM cable exposed, and fastened to the drywall. Am I misreading (08') 334.12 (A).2. Thanks.

I suggest, You should call your inspector and see what he says about using NM in above ceiling appliacation, here in NJ in my town they allow the use in rehab work as long as it is properly suppoted.

Maybe, it depends where you are working. Indiana has not adopted the 2008 NEC yet and the 2005 amendments have deleted 334.12(A)(2) without substitution. I am not saying you or the AHJ is wrong but you have to know what edition of the code you are working with and what the local amendments are where you are working.

Now to more directly answer your question, you are not misreading the section. Type NM cable is not permitted by the 2005 or the 2008 NEC.

Case in point, see codewarrior321's post.

I read it as NM is NOT allowed.
