Has anyone wired a house and the contractor sprays foam insulation in tha walls, and burys the nm wires in the insulation.
I was wondering if this is an approved method of wiring. or if the foam insulation is going to damage the wires over time. thanks for any replies.

A lot of modulars are done this way. I don't think the foam is going to hurt the Romex, but it sure makes doing anything after the fact a real PITA

We just started seeing spray in foam this summer, have been told that the foam is inert once set and will not react with anything, your talking about the green stuff correct , if so I have been told it is polyurethane buy the home owner.

Had some problems on first house where they pushed some wires out, but on the next house we stapled closer than the 4 1/2 ' allowance on NM . Also we ran ENT thru these foam walls for the telephone and cable wires per the owners request.

If you had to fish in these walls later, you will be out of luck !

Hurk: I think I know what you are trying to say. I always am suspicious of any brand-new high-technology building materials that appear on the market. This spray foam seams to fit this description. I have observed too many news stories of "brand-new high-technology building materials", having to be removed at a latter date, because of .... . And yet these new "high technology" materials keep on appearing.

You didn't here about it It was front page news about a year ago there flash pods on stage set off one of the worst club tragadys that happened in a long time the flash pods cought the spray on foam that the club was using for sound deadning on fire and burn the club down killing over 100 people including the lead gutarist of Great White.
If I remember right it was in Rode Island?

Yes it was, the wife and I had been to that club about 2 months before the fire, only a total moron would set off pyro in that building.

Great White (or what is left of them) tried to come back to do a benefit, threats of violence against the club hosting them canceled the show.

I did here of the tragedy, but I was not aware that Great White was involved. I was also not aware that foam insulation was a factor. The media in Calgary seemed to focus on other issues, such as overcrowding and fire exits. I hope that all the issues involved are looked at closely, so that this does not happen again.

One story I read said the owners had a choice of getting a properly rated system, or ordinary styrofoam type stuff.

Apparently they chose to cheap out and get the highly flammable/toxic stuff to save a few bucks.

(the whole operation sounded like it was slipshod and cobbled up to me)

I have heard of a few cases where too much formaldehyde was put in the foam and it made several dwellings uninhabitable. They had to be torn down.

In the Great White case it's my understanding as Tonyi stated that they used regular foam for soundproofing (I'm picturing sheets of foam), vs. the industry standard fire resistant foam sound proofing.

It is still daily news around here.

It was, as most things like this a series of good intentions, bad ideas, bad judgment by quite a few different people.

The state has changed the rules for sprinkler systems and now places with a capacity of more than 50 must be retrofitted with sprinkler systems.

Who is going to court to try to get out of doing this?

The police department in the states capitol.
