NM push in connector vs. box fill calculation

If I’m thinking of the right thing, I always thought “no” because the clamping mechanism is on the outside of the box per 314.16. Let’s see if anyone else has any comments.

Actually the clamp is inside the box but as Bill stated it probably has a smaller area inside the box then a metal clamp that is outside the box with a locknut and threads on the inside.

This is another example of a horribly written code section. The NEC has recycled wording from 50 years ago to fit with modern materials and it because of that it fails miserably. There is no doubt that the snap in type NM connectors (see photo) have the locking mechanism on the inside of the box. No one counts them for fill because they actually take up less space then a bushing or a 2 screw connector with the clamp on the outside of the box. Unfortunately with the way that this is written in Article 314 they must be counted.
