NM wire behind furnace cover

I say violation esp since they are using the furnace as a raceway to feed something other than the furnace. I would as expect a grommet but the install imo is not compliant. Not sure what code to site other then art.110

I agree with Dennis. The furnace itself is being used as a chase (Not necessarily a raceway as NM is a cable assembly and does not require installation in a raceway) to run NM cables to another piece of utilization equipment. 110.3(B) as the furnace is most likely not listed to pass cable assemblies through it.

I see the grommet as an issue but not the cable within the unit. From what I can see there are plenty of conductors already run in there so why would an extra cable matter?

The cable is actually supplying power to the furnace fan - for some reason, it was routed across the burner and then down the side (cannot see in the photo) to the fan compartment.

I see no problem with it. It has to get to the switch somehow.

I am not overjoyed with it coming in through a hole in the wall but not sure it is a violation.

Do you know that the temp. rating of the cable is equal to that of the other cables? It will probably never be an issue but it is pretty tacky work, imo. Again 110.3 could be an issue as well as the lack of grommet.

I don't but I'd bet that it's not higher than 90? C in that compartment otherwise you couldn't even touch the cover. :happysad:

So if he had a 1/2" KO on the left side, stripped the NM and entered the cable into the wiring compartment that wouldn't be compliant either? IMO the entire enclosure is a wiring compartment since it already has wire in it.
