NMB and Conduit restrictions

I would like to run some additional wires (12/2) through a wall in my stairway for a few new circuits on my second floor. The problem that I have is that the wall is not a normal depth - 2x4 turned on its side (1.5" deep). I was thinking of running the wires through metal conduit to protect them according to NEC 2002 - 334.15(B) but I can't find info. regarding the number of wires allowed - NM wire type not listed Annex C. What is the best way to proceed?

Re: NMB and Conduit restrictions

just trying to be cautions - I thought there was an issue with minimum wall depth that unprotected electrical service could be run through. Maybe I am wrong.

Re: NMB and Conduit restrictions

Needed to track down my sources. According to NEC 300.4(D) the wires need to be 1.25" or more from the outer wall surface. Although an exception is made for concealed work in finished structures where you would have to fish the cables between access points, I have total access to the inside of the wall and figured that it was better to be safe than sorry.

Re: NMB and Conduit restrictions

How about a j-box at each end of wall with conduit in between and the NEC will tell you how many conductors the conduit will hold.

Fish cables. No conduit. You're complicating the problem needlessly. Unless you're in...Chicago? :)
