NMD 90 Direct Burial

Hi Folks been busy with family electrical problems and got most of em sorted out. Now have another job line up and of course more code violation  . I know that burring a Nmd 90 directly in the ground is a violation and then running that same nmd90 thru a concrete wall without protection is also code breaking at it's finest. Can you give me several reasons why this is unsafe?

My brother who currently building a patio deck for someone told the owner I could install a few lights in the drive way and do some other odd electrical jobs around the house. I drove up there the other day to see what was involved before I commited to this job. The owner wants a light on a post at the drive way entrance and another light post erected near the house.

The owner was not home so My bro showed me what the owner wanted. The Driveway is about 100ft and there is a 14-2 nmd90 buried directly in the ground with each end sprouting from the ground like a weed gone wild. Then further up there is another nmd90 buried the same way , directly in the ground and both nmd 90 exit the ground next the foundation travel a few feet up the wall and are directly inserted thru the concrete and left hanging in the basement.

I told my bro that this is not acceptable and that these wires need to be protected by conduit or have wire that is rated for direct burial. When I do chat to the owner I wish to have ample reasons why the nmd90 needs to be replaced besides telling them it is against code. How can I explain to the owner how unsafe this is and more or less convince them to get the proper conductor and/or use the proper materials and have the lines dug up.

Only thing I can think off is that the concrete will eventually chafe thru the jackets shorting it out and someone can cut the buried wires if they dig in that area and they better hope that it never rained the day before. Just wish to emphisized on how unsafe this is.

Maybe next time I am in the area just do a Drive-by:D

He says he's a first year electrician... Read the code section on NM. That will give you plenty of ammo for pushing for a code compliant job.

are you sure it is nm and not uf?

read this. he got $9 for the answer.

Can you run nmd90 cable underground from one out building to another as long as it run thru PVC rigid conduit?

yes you can - however you must use a slightly larger conduit to allow for heat dissipation so you dont have to de-rate the size of the breaker.
