Found this recently. Red wire had been cut short & buried in the connector. It was live. No end to the sloppy & dangerous junk. I’ll be glad when I can retire. Gotta hang in another 3 years at least.

The worst part of my picture was I was doing what amounted to a home inspection of where one of my kids was going to live off campus. Also found a gas furnace flue pipe half off. Just about hit the roof.

Maybe they added a wire and the box was too small, so to avoid that problem they removed the box.
Looks like no wirenuts, I wonder how good the connections are?
Seen this before, soldered connections. Connections probably pretty good but no ground. Seen it in ceiling cavity for lighting runs, not legal found this before, box didn't have enough KOs.

It was a long time ago, but as I recall they weren't soldered. I added some ungrounded GFCI receptacles in my kid's room and an AFCI breaker. Thankfully, the AFCI didn't trip right off. This is after I cleaned it up:

Here was the gas furnace flue pipe...had to fix that too:

A lot of these college rentals are really hacked up. It is a wonder there aren't more tragedies.

How does spell check decide when it wants to work?
I don’t know but that & overlays have messed me up more than they have helped me. I try to check everything before posting but miss a lot. That’s 1 of the few negative issues about this forum. Virtually no time to edit mistakes.

🤔
Don’t we have something like 20 minutes?
I have to edit constantly and seldom run out of time.

I do a lot at night when I’m tired, then don’t see the errors until past time. My bad really, I should be more attentive. My school teacher parents roll over in their graves. 🤣

I hope that's really a hot air duct and not a flue pipe to exhaust the combustion gasses.
It was definitely the flue pipe from the gas furnace...in the room right next to my kid's bedroom. You can see the double wall pipe B-vent pipe the dislodged piece is going in to.
