Client needs a receptacle installed for new dishwasher. The old DW was hard wired. There is no EG in the current feed (early 1960's two wire service and branch circuitry). It would be a royal pain in the derriere to get an EG there. Install a GFCI protected outlet? Or no matter what, run an EG? What say the Forum Masters?

Thanks..

Check 250.110.

You might be able to do it if it is hard wired, if you meet the requirements of 250.110 .

Cord-and-plug connected DWs must be connected to an EGC - 250.114(3)(b)

Nice code reference.

Thank you.

FWIW, I doubt it could be done legally. I suspect a house old enough to have romex with no EGC would have metal pipeing - meaning the requirement of 250.110(1) couldn't be met.

Any chance that new DW has a double insulated pump motor? 250.114 Exception

Thanks

Thanks

Thanks to all for your responses. It still looks like the general consensus for a code compliant install is to run an EG from the service. It will be ugly to do that. I'll also need to install a GES with a couple of ground rods.

I have not seen the DW, but I might have a better shot at powerball than finding that the DW has a double insulated motor. But it is a good idea to check.

Ultimately, I need to get her to rewire the whole house, but until then........

What would be the safest install with no EG? Her old dishwasher was hardwired for years. (from back in the day when a dishwasher would actually last for years)

New stuff almost certainley has 120 timers or controls. That means imbalance/ current on the appliance case.
