No ground

Hello - we recently had a customer inquire about having existing recessed lights replaced with some WAC metal recessed lights. It’s a 1940s house with Romex that does not have a ground. The new lights would require ELV dimmers. Would the dimmers work ok without a ground? Or does it make sense to run a new circuit for those lights?Thanks

A new circuit is best, IMO. We are under AFCI requirements. Those aside, it’s still the better way to go.

If the homeowner did not want to have a new circuit because of drywall repair would you still do the job or walk away? Is there a real danger not having a ground on that circuit?

Ask yourself, if something should happen what would the light company be responsible for if a ground was not ran vs what the installation instruction say. Looks to me you would void any liability by lighting company.

You need an EGC or GFCI protection for the circuit. See 410.44 and its exceptions.
