I need some help, I read it somewhere that you can not put mechanical equipment that requires maintenance in the electrical room. I need to find where this is located.

We have a air compressor in the electrical room that is leaving oil residue and thick dust collecting on the electrical 4000 amp 600 volt switchgear. It will require another room be built for the air compressor unless it can be relocated to a different room. Either way I need to show justification for it to be removed.

Re: no mechanical equip. in electrical room

you can put anything you want in there (well almost) as long as it does not interfere with egress and working space requirements.

you might have an argument that the oil film is somehow interfering with the safe operation of the electrical equipment.

Re: no mechanical equip. in electrical room

Not per the NEC. There is dedicated equipment space requirements however this incorporates a zone and not the entire room. See Section 110.26.

Re: no mechanical equip. in electrical room

You may also have some leverage if you can use 384-4 of the 93 or earlier NEC.

Specifically, you can cite "protected against damage" in 110.26(F), and assert that the oil and dust are a source of damage.
