I started this new job bout 3 mos ago and nobody talks code. PERIOd. Find it very odd coming from a shop that used to talk about it all the time. Lunch consists of everyone saying nothing. Driving me crazy actually. Just curious what everyones take on that is?

I was as guilty as anybody. Years ago I never read the code book. Just learnd what I needed to know to get by is Residential work and small comercial. Stayed up with the code changes only as they applied to what I was doing. Now I am playing ketch up.

Whip out your copy of EC&M (or other trade magazine)....might as well read while no one is disturbing you ;)

No one talks shop while at the shop? Wow, that sound weird. Where else would you talk shop at? Oh, I know, at the local bar!

Besides Lunch, I wish they'd stop talking, put a tool in your hand

Not even stories ? ? Even Short stories ?! Sadness ...

Ya'll need more Tool box talks! :) Maybe a safety review moment for desert!

The Job alone can be drama enough, maybe its a good thing there not having to interupt their / our moment
Mind you its never a cause to hold back for me personally, but like any speech, is all in the Timing.

It's odd.. Not sure what the deal is. Not sure if the code part is beacause nobody really knows the code? And not talking about anything at all.. Boring as hell, I'd rather not even take a lunch.

I don't talk code at work unless asked.

Talk code at lunch? I don't think so, I much rather listen to the apprentices talk about what they have been doing or hear how everyones family is doing.

Or maybe just make fun of each other....

When I was apprenticed I worked a silent shop I told a friend about it and he suggested I start the conversation by asking a question on code requirements so the next day I did and it worked,so you can curse the darkness or you can turn on a light.

I agree with Bob (iwire) but there maybe a few of us that wouldn't mind discussing code. When it does happen it usually revolves around the changes or an inspection were violations were sited, anyway thats what this site is for:))))

I try not to talk about code a whole lot, unless an opening comes up that I just can't resist. I don't hesitate to give a wink and say, "So is this code or not?" every now and then, but I really don't want to be the guy with the pocket protector. I mean, I am anyway, so no sense laying in on thicker than it has to be, you know? :)

Many presidents ago, where I started out as an apprentice, we had a Thursday-after-work class that was 'taught' by one of the more experienced JWs in the shop.

No attendance, no program, no requirements, no tests....

Just who wanted to show up and learn about whatever they needed to know.

One day it might be box & raceway fill. Next week, how to bend EMT. Then we spend an evening talking basics, like Ohms Law. It was very informal, and very informative. Lots of fun, and lots of sodas. I probably learned more in those 'classes' than I did anywhere else.

The boss didn't mind us being there after hours as long as two things happened: We were serious about learning the trade, and stuck to the topic, and we made sure the shop was locked up when we left.

Nobody talks code? Consider yourself lucky. The only "code talk" I've ever been in is arguments, and they get really interesting when you're up against the "I've been doing it that way for 20 years" types.

You kidding? Those are the best. :D

I use to send out articles regarding the code, new products and informative electrical news, then I would question the guys. The answer most often given was I never see that stuff my wife gets the mail and trashes everything but the check. I thought about sending home a note saying the first employee to bring the note in would get a $500.00 bonus and see what happens.
