I have to install 2- 30a 480v trash compactor feeds. The nearest 480 panel is in the elevator machine room which is next to the loading dock. Very convienient. All the branch ckts in this panel are elevator related. Would there be a code violation if were to proceed with this install?

Re: non elevator related equipment in elevator panel

Here in California there just might. the state inspects elevators here. I've never seen anything in that panel besides elevators, though I would have to check to be absolutely sure. I know they are very picky about what is and cannot be in that room or panel.

Re: non elevator related equipment in elevator panel

It?s not as clear as I might like, but I think it would be a violation of 620.25(A). The second sentence says that the other utilization equipment for which separate branch circuits are to be run shall be restricted to the equipment listed in 620.1. That list is limited to elevators, dumbwaiters, escalators, moving walks, wheelchair lifts, and stairway chair lifts. I infer that using the elevator panel to power non-elevator equipment is not allowed.

Re: non elevator related equipment in elevator panel

620.71 Guarding Equipment.
Elevator, dumbwaiter, escalator, and moving walk driving machines; motor-generator sets; motor controllers; and disconnecting means shall be installed in a room or space set aside for that purpose.

By adding equipment in this room, that is not associated with this room, You are getting rid of the space required for guarding of equipment that is set aside for that purpose.

Re: non elevator related equipment in elevator panel

I think there is more specific wording in ANSI 17.1 and ASME 17.1.

This site might help. I did only say might. :)

I think the original question had to do with non-elevator equipment located outside (in the loading dock area), but powered by the panel in the elevator equipment room.

Re: non elevator related equipment in elevator panel

But that breaker is inside, and non related. A Breaker is considered, by def's in 100, an piece of equipment.

Sorry for the confusion.

Re: non elevator related equipment in elevator panel

Refer to 620.37(A). A panelboard that is located inside an elevator machine room cannot be used to power anything that is not inside the machine room.

Re: non elevator related equipment in elevator panel

My experience is that intention of all elevator codes is very strict & bdingman has a good point with 620.37(A)
