I failed a residential inspection because the KO on a single gang nail on plastic box was broken when the wire was inserted. Is it code that the entry maintain a clamp on the wire. Even though the wire was strapped just above the box, the inspector claimed you should not be able to pull the wire back out of the box.

Any thoughts on the code?

As Celtic said he should cite a particular article. The exception to 314.17(C) permits the cable to be inserted into the box without securing the cable to the box. The cable must be fastened within 8".

314.17(C) Nonmetallic Boxes and Conduit Bodies. Nonmetallic boxes and conduit bodies shall be suitable for the lowest temperature-rated conductor entering the box. Where nonmetallic boxes and conduit bodies are used with messenger supported wiring, open wiring on insulators, or concealed knob-and-tube wiring, the conductors shall enter the box through individual holes. Where flexible tubing is used to enclose the conductors, the tubing shall extend from the last insulating support to not less than 6 mm (? in.) inside the box and beyond any cable clamp. Where nonmetallic-sheathed cable or multiconductor Type UF cable is used, the sheath shall extend not less than 6 mm (? in.) inside the box and beyond any cable clamp. In all instances, all permitted wiring methods shall be secured to the boxes.
Exception: Where nonmetallic-sheathed cable or multiconductor Type UF cable is used with single gang boxes not larger than a nominal size 57 mm ? 100 mm (2 ? in. ? 4 in.) mounted in walls or ceilings, and where the cable is fastened within 200 mm (8 in.) of the box measured along the sheath and where the sheath extends through a cable knockout not less than 6 mm (? in.), securing the cable to the box shall not be required. Multiple cable entries shall be permitted in a single cable knockout opening.

That's where I was heading - but didn't want to give away the "punch line".

I was wondering what "...the wire was strapped just above the box,.." translated into - feet or inches.

Been there done that.Have had an inspector try and fail a rough in because the openings on a quick clip box were opened with a needle nose or a hammer claw. All I asked was where does it say the clip must hold the cable assy. after a few min. of fumbling all I got was.Well in the future tell your guys to not break the CLIPS.Now when he found unused openings on boxes unused and open on another day ,I said write it up and we will correct it.

do not despair these issues are the stuff that fills the job box talk and enamore us to our Vocation . If we do not have tale to pass on to the heirs of this nobal quest how can we expect to perpetuate or legacy

I'm lucky I use Allied boxes - the integral cable clamp is mentioned in their material as a suitable closure for an unused opening. There is no relief for a single gang box (since the singles come without clamps), but it's nice to know.

Depending on how big the hole is and if it may cause damage to the cable, he just may site this code reference!

314.17 Conductors Entering Boxes, Conduit Bodies, or Fittings.
Conductors entering boxes, conduit bodies, or fittings shall be protected from abrasion and shall comply with 314.17(A) through (D).

(A) Openings to Be Closed. Openings through which conductors
enter shall be adequately closed.
