what and where does the nec refer to a "non-sds", if at all? i am trying to determine if a ups i am providing power to is considered an sds or non sds.

Re: non sds?

justin,
If it has a "two-winding" transformer (not an auto-transformer) in it, it is an SDS.

There is some good information at this website -Teal Resources

They have some other power quality related application notes. Click on "Application Notes" on the menu to the left.

Re: non sds?

Justin, this is a difficult question to answer. The UPS may or may not be SDS. Need more info to help you.

It depends on many factors. If it is plugged into a recept, it is not SDS. If it is a dual conversion type, it may or may not be SDS.

Your best bet will be to look in the installation instructions. If it requires a GEC connection, it is SDS. Some manufactures even make it optional.

As a general rule, units larger than 7.2 KVA are SDS. Units less than 7.2 KVA may or may not be SDS

Re: non sds?

The article stated by Ed, is very good. However it does not address a separately derived system.

The NEC does not address a separately derived source. The sources for an AC separately derived system are listed in the definition.

A UPS should be treated as a UPS. A generator as a generator. A transformer as a transformer.
