I've got a client who wants to use a product by Medicanix, a UPS designed to be used, or at least "marketed, to small Ambulatory Procedure facilities. Specifically, this particular facility does angioplasty and other Interventional Radiology type procedures.

Regardless of that, the Medicanix UPS is not UL listed as an assembly. The components are all listed but it is not UL listed but that is of course, not the same thing. For 2500 bucks they'll send someone out to UL label the assembly.

Does the NEC require that this be so listed and if so where?

The NEC does not even mention UL listing anywhere. But generally, the need for listing by an NRTL (Nationally Recognized Testing Lab) is codified in amendments state by state, sometimes by individual municipalities. So really, the people to ask are your local AHJs.

That said, UL listings for UPS systems is different from things like UL508, and listing an assembly with a UPS inside, i.e. under UL 508a, can be a bit tricky even if the UPS is listed, because which FILE number it is listed under can make a difference. But I'm not sure UL508a even applies to medical equipment.so again, the place to start is your AHJ.

From 2011-

Labeled. Equipment or materials to which has been attached a label, symbol, or other identifying mark of an organization that is acceptable to the authority having jurisdiction and concerned with product evaluation, that maintains periodic inspection of production of labeled equipment or materials, and by whose labeling the manufacturer indicates compliance with appropriate standards or performance in a specified manner.

Listed. Equipment, materials, or services included in a list published by an organization that is acceptable to the authority having jurisdiction and concerned with evaluation of products or services, that maintains periodic inspection of production of listed equipment or materials or periodic evaluation of services, and whose listing states that either the equipment, material, or service meets appropriate designated standards or has been tested and found suitable for a specified purpose.

Does Medicanix bring anything to the table other than being used is these type of facilities?

I think you can get a field evaluation to list a UPS to the appropriate UPS category code.

AFAIK, the file number is actually associated with the manufacturer and not the type of equipment.

I think if an equipment is listed, it is not liable to inspection except installation and connectons to power source.
