I recently received a meter socket from my local utility. It bears no UL designation. Can utility provided components be subject to disapproval by the AHJ?

If it is on the utility side of the service point, then technically the NEC does not apply. An AHJ might try invoking some other adopted code.
In the same way, the utility is allowed to use wire types, such as URD, that are not recognized by the NEC.

An electric utility is exempt from local jurisdiction for power generation and distribution. They do not have to follow the NEC or have any NRTL listings.
I would assume that inspector is experienced working with that utility so you should be fine. If he does take issue with it, you may want to suggest he contact the utility to resolve his concern.
If you are uncomfortable installing it without the matter being resolved, which is reasonable, you can call the inspector and run it through him before you do the work. That should ease your concern.
