Nowhere for switch box placement

The blue light switch box on the stud is facing the kitchen,
The other side of the occupied stud is where I'd like to put the light switch box for the living room using the white cables hanging down.
The problem is there's a yellow cable attached to the stud where I'd like to put the light switch box.
The remaining unused stud is too close to the wall, I don't want to use that one . what should I do?

Could you remove the staple of the yellow nm cable where your box is to be placed? It should then be able to go behind or alongside your box. You may have to re-staple the cable at some point to maintain your 4.5' but that shouldn't be a problem.

I agree

If you cannot reroute yellow cable, cut it and splice it in the switch box. Use a 4x4 box and plaster ring if a deep switch box does not have the volume needed.

In my mind cutting the cable might not allow enough slack to splice in the switch box. Possibly would need a second box with a piece of cable between it and switch box.

I have done it. As you said you come up a bit short, but usually the ends make it into the box but you then gotta extend the conductors a bit with a wire nut or such. It can be a PITA.

As I posted this is only an alternate if you cannot reroute.

Just remember if you go this route 300.14 requires a minimum of 3" of wire extending outside the device box.

Your suggestions have really helped, what I would do is reroute the yellow straight through the top of the switch box and out the bottom without splicing.

But I thought code did not allow for a yellow cable to be in the same box as white cable,
But I guess I thought wrong again, I've got to get my license

How can you enter and leave a box without splicing a cable? Only possible to not splice if you have conduit/raceway.

Why would two different size cables not be allowed in a box as long as there is the correct volume?

Color coding of cables is only a manufacturers convention. What you have is 12/2 +ground and 14/2+ground NM-B. Good for you to learn terminology.

No such code. I would remove the piece of wood, install the box, and then route the cable around it with the slack.
