Read 517.1, Scope and 517.2, Definitions to determine which areas require what.

Thats a complicated question. I will attempt a partial answer. First, you should probably also check out NFPA 99 - Standards for Health Care Facilities. Chapter 16 is for Nursing Homes.

Second, article 517.10:
"(A) Part II shall apply to patient care areas of all health care facilities. "

"(B) Part II shall not apply to the following:
(1) Business offices, corridors, waiting rooms, and the like in clinics, medical and dental offices, and outpatient facilities.
(2) Areas of nursing homes and limited care facilities wired in accordance with chapters 1-4 of this code where these areas are used exclusively as patient sleeping rooms.

FPF: See NFPA 101-2000, Life Safety Code.

The handbook also lists a formal interpertation that basically says Part II doesn't apply where patient care activities do not involve the use of electrical or electronic life support systems, or invasive procedures where patients are electrically connected to line connected electromedical devices.

The handbook also has a more detailed explination of what is considered a patient care area, and what is designated a sleeping area. Also see the definition of "patient care area" in 517.2.
If you don't have it, I suggest you get the handbook.

Along with Earl and Steve's code references, do yourself a favor and forget the MC and stick with HCFC. (unless you are having to competitively bid the job) There are many areas in a healthcare facility where MC can be used but if you have employees that you may not be able to supervise continuously you will find it in the wrong locations. In a negotiated (buy out) package, the quantity of cable you would be talking about would get the HCFC down to real numbers
