In The 1999 NEC 517-10(b)(2) it states that nursing homes do not have to meet the requirements of this section. We haven't built too many nursing homes and I was curious what other people have seen when wiring these facilities. Could Romex be used for branch circuits and SE cable for feeders? The Engineer has designed a portion of the facility with multiple transfer switches similar to a small electrical system for a hospital which is what got me to thinking about this issue.

Any thoughts would be helpful.

Re: Nursing Home Wiring

Note that it states areas of nursing homes. Patient sleeping areas are indicated as not applying to part 2.

(2) Areas of nursing homes and limited care facilities wired in accordance with Chapters 1 through 4 of this Code where these areas are used exclusively as patient sleeping rooms

Re: Nursing Home Wiring

If you are putting in transfer switches and a generator then romex or even mc or ac cable would not qualify for this portion of the system.

I don't think that is necessarily true. 517.30 (2002 NEC) only applies to hospitals. Even if this was a hospital, MC and AC cable might be used for optional loads, or for the equipment branch.

I agree with cpal's responce but am wondering if this is an Engineered project, don't the spec's call for the wiring method for this project?

Re: Nursing Home Wiring

Currently we are early on in the design phase and I was working on a budget for the work associated with it. I have contacted the engineer and he is unsure as well so he will be contacting the local AHJ.
