I am renovating a nursing home therapy room in CT. They have a residential kitchen mock-up to help retrain patients. I was told that I needed a emergency shut off for the range. can someone tell me where I can find this info. NFPA or Life safety code? . Also according to my understanding of the NEC. HCF cable or metal conduit is the only acceptable wiring method for therapy rooms and dining rooms even though its not specified in the NEC

OK I'll give this a shot and I hope I don't have to spit out feathers from eating crow  My reference is the NEC 2005 Handbook.

"I am renovating a nursing home therapy room in CT. They have a residential kitchen mock-up to help retrain patients."

* This does seem to meet the requirements of Patient Care Area and special attention must be given to 517.11 especially the FPN and associated commentary.

"I was told that I needed a emergency shut off for the range. can someone tell me where I can find this info. NFPA or Life safety code?."

* Art. 517 does not address this equipment. I don't have the NFPA or LSC references maybe someone else does and will help you, but if I can find any info on this I'll post again.

"Also according to my understanding of the NEC. HCF cable or metal conduit is the only acceptable wiring method for therapy rooms and dining rooms even though its not specified in the NEC"

* See 517.13(A) & (B) and the commentary for approved wiring methods in the designated areas. Dining rooms are excluded in the definition of Patient Care Area FPN.

It seems like it comes down to the commentary after 517.11..."The
[/i]Code assigns responsibility for the designation of the types of patient care areas to the governing body of the health care facility. Both the design and the inspection of a patient care area therefore, must be based on the governing body's designation rather than the superficial appearance of the area." My suggestion would be to contact the "governing body" and the GC for a more detailed clarification before you submit your proposal. In short give them what they want as long as it meets or exceeds minimum code standards.
