Occupancy sensors

Does the NEC even mention motion sensors?

When I hear 'motion sensor' I think alarm system components.

When I hear 'occupancy sensors' I think of a device to control lighting and or HVAC equipment.

That aside the technology appears to me to be the same.

It is. Motion detectors or occupancy sensors use the same technology. They are typically passive infrared (PIR) or ultrasonic. Each has their advantages and indications depending on the application.

California Energy Standards make a distinction

Occupancy Sensors- are mentioned in std's covering Interior Use

Motion Detector-are mentioned in std's covering Exterior Use

This is my inference. I don't have the std's in front of me.

You can get some that combine the 2 technologies. 8) I have been following you and asking questions. :p

Actually you are right, there are Passive Infrared and Ultrasonic Sensors, and there is DUAL Sensors, that combines both technologies in a single unit, but Occupancy Sensors are primarly "motion detectors" because they determine if there is someone in the area due to the motion they make and that is detect by the sensor. In the case the person will be complety still for some time (programed by the user) the Occupancy Sensor will turn off the lights.
