I got a question on a house im looking to buy. A contractor installed a new panel in a house that is a 200a panel. It is fed with #2 via a triplex that comes from a 100amp disconnect on the garage which is fed from the meter. My question is, is it legal to have the ocpd outside on the garage and just use the 200amp main in the panel as a disconnect. Found nothing in code that prohibits it.

There are a number of questions that might arise on such an installation, but as long as the ondutors from the garage to the house are protected at their ampacity, there is no Code violation with the panel having an oversized main.
Depending on the size and type of wiring connected to the triplex, a 100 amp OCP on the #2 might be questionable.
