I have some wall mount lights that require a 3-1/2" or 4" octagon box. These boxes will be mounted in brick. All I can find are steel concrete rings by Raco and Steel City. They do not really apply in my situation as their application is for poured decks in parking ramps or high rises. Any suggestions?

Re: Octagon boxes in concrete

the type and weight of the fixtures would make a difference. If less than 6 lbs. a single gang device box would be allowed(they fit nice in brick)314 27 exception.

Re: Octagon boxes in concrete

I don't know the weight as it wasn't included in the submittles. I assume it is more than 6 lbs since the manufacture specifically asked for an octagon box.

Re: Octagon boxes in concrete

There has to be specs on the fixture.manufacturer,#`s.or are they prewires only.

Re: Octagon boxes in concrete

All the info I received did not indicate weight. Lets assume they are 8 pounds each, any suggestions on a box style? As I stated earlier, the fixture specs called for a 3-1/2" or 4" octagon box.

Re: Octagon boxes in concrete

Why can?t you use a standard 3/0 or 4/0 box? If you have the masons grout around them with their mud the boxes will easily hold most fixtures.

Re: Octagon boxes in concrete

I've had fair success adapting things to masonry situations by using long 1/4 bolts through the holes in the back of the box and wedge nutting a couple of nuts on the ends of those bolts. Mortar up the hole and shove the box and the extended bolts into a mortar bed packed into the opening. With the mortar skooshing around the bolts and wedged nuts, its an assembly that will never come loose once the mortar sets up.
