# of wires in a 6x6 trough

my panel at my house was a mess, i attached a 6x6 trough to the side of the panel with 2, 2" nipples, i plan on bringing all the circuits, 42 of them into the trough with bx connecters, then splicing new leads of 12 awg to the old runs and bringing them thru the new nipples into the pannel. Question, is this against code,or do you have any other suggestions thanks!!!

Article 376 Metal Wireways
Article 376.22 Number of conductors (shall not exceed 20% of the interior cross-sectional area of the wireway).
Table 314.16(B) Volume Allowance Required per Conductor.

There is some planing required according to the number of wires and their sizes, at any given point of the wireway.

Table 5 page 70-622 2002 NEC, will give you the area of the conductors.

I think if these are circuit conductors in your house you will probably have plenty of room
