Can I mount a disconnect switch on a oil fired boiler like we can with a gas unit? Or does it have to be at the top of the stairs or the like? Thx

The NEC requires you place a disconect within sight of the oil burner.

If your local fire regs are like ours in MA you will also have to provide one at the top of the stairs with a red plate that says Oil Burner Emergency Switch The local supply houses stock these plates.

I believe that some building codes requires a switch at the top of the stairs for oil fired heating appliances. Years ago we installed them for gas units too but not anymore. This is not an NEC requirement. This has come up before. Try a search of this site for more information.

In MA were are required by the oil burrner code to have an "emergency switch" for the burner. The requirement for the location of this switch is "outside of the room containing the oil burner". Often it is located at the top of the stairs, but should not be in the satirwell of the basement. Should be on the other side of the door. After years of unsuccessfully trying to get an answer on the exact requirement of the location of the switch, I broke down and spent the $2.05 to have the code for myself. BTW, the oil burner code requires it to shut down power to the solenoid controlling the oil valve, not necessarily power to everything associated with the boiler. Not a big deal, but misunderstood by a lot of people I've talked to.
