oil burner wiring question

I know this is not a electrical code question but here goes. In NH a fire-o-matic (thermal cut-out switch )is required over a oil burner. What I want to know is there a height restriction? I would like to mount it on a garage ceiling that is about 14' high over the burner. Thoughts?
 
Hmm a I think you have to check with your local AHJ on that one. But why do you want to put it so why? Can yo come off the side of the burner with a cut of EMT and 90 it over the burner?
 
In MA it needs to be within a certain height of the burner assembly. I bellieve it is 6 or 6 1/2 feet off the top of my head. It is regulated by the "oil burner" code. So I'd guess there is a requirement in NH for this, too.

I would check with the local fire Marshall. It seems high to me.What method are you going to use to go from 14Ft. fire o matic back to the burner? Seems that there could be a lot of fire damage before the heat reaches the fire o matic to turn power off to the burner.

It's not a 'switch' it is basically a heat detector that opens the circuit once when it melts out, kind of like a pop up timer on a turkey. :)

Because you wrote that, I'm going to start thinking of firomatics as "turkey timers" now. :D
 
From Mass code:
(e) An electrical thermal switch fused to break the ungrounded conductor in the main circuit at 165?F, shall be installed in the main power line within six feet over the top of the burner-boiler or burner-furnace.
If the ceiling above the burner-boiler or burner-furnace exceeds 12 feet in height, an additional thermal switch shall be installed on the ceiling and connected in series with the lower switch.
 
Scott, does that only apply to oil burners? The rule does sound specific as to the fuel type. I know Bob has posted that before but I'm pretty sure he said it comes from the oil burner code.

Correct. I've even been told that "it should have been removed when the burner was converted from oil to gas".
