Can anyone recommend a textbook or website dealing with old or obsolete cabling?

At the moment I am working in a building built in the 1920s wired with BX cabling. I am looking for further information about the electrical standards used during those times.

Thanks.

For historical information, The American Electricians Handbook by Croft & Summers. You can find new and older editions at www.amazon.com . The latest (14th) edition is from 2002, but it has been in print for a century.

Also, Your Old Wiring by Shapiro, and Wiring A House by Cauldwell.

The above references will offer good clues about materials and installation techniques, but the real insight comes from understanding the history of enforcement for the property you are asking about. If there are periods where there was little, or no, enforcement of electrical codes in the jurisdiction that this 1920s building is in, then all bets are off as to whether much, or any, of the work was done to any standard or code.

Your first best resource for the standards or codes in effect for that particular 1920s building will lie in the recall of a local old-timer.
