I looked at building to add 20 amp outlet for ice maker. wile there i notice the lighting for the room witch is 18' high are 70 60 watt lamps (bulbs) on a huge dimmer. from the dimmer to lamps is # 6 wire the each lamps are taped to the #6 with #14 wire. the dimmer runs on a 50 amp 1 pole breaker. building was built in 1916. was this up to code in the day?
 
I believe with a heavy-duty lamp holder and #12 taps, it would be legal today.
In that era it may be all open wiring (I didn't see your mention of that) which would not be allowed today unless we called it a barn :)
