i noticed a gfci outlet i had a while and a new one i just bought both 20amp.new one had the t shape slot old one didn't why?i don't think i've seen a appilance plug with a t shape prong.

your confusing a 15a gfi with 20 amp feed thru capacity. In other words, one of your gfi's wasn't a 20 amp receptacle.

The old one was a 15a receptical - with "20a feed-thru" rating . The new one is a 20a recept with 20a feed-thru.

Wow - I type slow....

Consequently, there is nothing with a "T shaped prong". 15 amp appliances have two prongs that are both straight up and down. 20 amp appliances have one straight up and down, and one sideways. The T slot is to accomodate either a 15 or 20 amp plug.

thank you.what is a 15amp with a 20amp feed thru for?

It just means you can use a 15 amp GFCI on a 20 amp circuit, and have 20 amps worth of real load on the load side of the 15 amp GFCI without blowing up the GFCI. The 15 amp rating on a GFCI essentially just is in regard to the face of the device. Otherwise, it's 20 amps worth of sturdy.

so how do you know if you have a 15amp with a 20amp feed thru?
