any ideas how to make this MD more compliant to code?
on grounding?.I have to feed 4 split systems from this MD .
Did you think about installing a distribution panel.

Rip out the guts and use the tub as a junction box. Put a new panelboard next to the box. Or if the tub is big enough, get one of those panelboard retrofit kits and turn it into a proper panelboard with a separate breaker for each load.

Is the feeder large enough for the new loads?

I sugested that to owner. the usual, they want the hvac working for now, and he's going to upgrade sometime soon.
this is a better visual of what all this looks like.my concern is the phase balance , they are installing single phase split systems

Now that's classic old school work there....4X4 troughs with the disco's line and load nippled out of it...there's gotta be some sticks and cardboard wedged in there. :D

Right, once the a/c is going you will never hear from him agian. Why would

he spend more money if the a/c's are working?

It looks like there used to be 3 more meters, that are now disconnected, so

maybe there is more ampacity there than it looks like. If that service will

carry the total load, you could remove the load from the MD then come off it

with your own wire to a tap box, tap the old/new loads. As far as balance

of the load, you can only do so much as the loads will run only when needed.

I'm looking at those retrofit kits , I don't see many 400 amps thought ,I wonder if square D have those (boxes in pics are square D)

I opened a can and found a stick - it fell out - but when I went to close it I found out the hard way what it was there for - when the kearny blew through the cover.

As for the OP - have you considered starting over???? I think the time and effort to save it would be better spent starting fresh. It'll look better - you'll feel better....

And what are those other conductors on the line side of the switch for??? Looks sneaky....

Change the lugs on the out put side of the fuse to multi hole lugs.
