Buy a new fan.

You could probably have the motor rebuilt, but you would need to REALLY like the fan because it would definitely cost more than it is worth.

too hot

too hot

Use liquid cooling or a huge heat or a small fan to cancel out the bad effects of your few shorted winding turns in your large fan.

now you may understand why it was at the resale shop in the first place.

however, some of those old fan motors run pretty warm, but is normal. too hot to touch is not really a temperature. is it too hot to hold on to, or too hot to briefly touch.

A guy in my office bought two of those 12 foot radius $2,450.00 each

We have the 24 foot one, took the speed up to 10 once, right after we got it installed, tooks 4 hours to clean up shop, speed limit is now 3. Peoples reaction when they visit our shop is pretty funny, they always look up and say "Wow, thats a big ass fan!" (Says so right on the bottom)

moderator who looks like an angry Clint Eastwood:

set the fan at maximum speed
find a series impedance or fan dimmer that gives you a reasonable fan speed
check the motor temp

if the temp is reasonable, you have salvaged your free fan.

A lot of the old Hunter fans had bearings that ran in an oil bath . There was a small hole in the housing ( top ) and it came with a small bottle of machine oil .
You poured the contents slowly into the hole and those babys would run smooth and quiet forever .

EDIT --- Boy do I feel stupid !!! I missed the part where you said that you oiled it . Never mind .
