Me and my fianc?e are adding a studio to our home. Sometimes when we have both ac's on (living room and bedroom) we trip a circuit. I am not sure if they are on the same circuit. So know we will gave some additional loads from the studio. A stove and some receptacles/ lighting circuits. I am obviously not doing this but would like to be informed. Can I just add a breaker for the lighting/ conv power and a separate breaker for the stove. I guess I need to have room in the panel and if not I have to upgrade the panel ???? Thanks

Well, if they both go off, and only one breaker trips, they're on the same circuit.

Window shakers (plug-in A/C's) should each have their own dedicated circuit, despite that it fits regular receptacles.

These are questions that one really needs to be there to answer well. There are existing-load calcs, new-load calcs, etc.

Who is doing the work, that they can't make these decisions? (Nothing personal, of course.)

it is tough out there and if you are an estimator you should know the answer to your post....imo:-?

Not necessarily true Sparky. And I am I know what needs to be runs for the loads that for sure. I am just not sure if I need to upgrade my panel. I am not home as I have been staying somewhere else for a few days. I am not even sure the size of my panel as I never looked and have not been in the home that long. I strictly estimate/help estimate commercial construction.....

The first thing to do is get the horse in front of the cart. The first thing that needed is a load calculation to see if the service you have is large enough for the load served. If the service size is sufficient then check to see how many breakers the panel was designed to hold. There are many 30-40 position panels out there that look like they are full when they really have 10 more positions that can be legally used.

If the panel really is full but the service size is correct then a sub panel is normally the cheapest and easiest way to go to get more space for extra circuits. If you have a really old panel then a panel up grade may be the way to go.

What you need to do is get a licensed electrician to look this over and give his/her opinion on what's needed and then ask questions based on this information.

Since you have informed us that you will not be doing this work, I infer that you have hired an electrician. I think the right thing to do here is to talk with that person. Let him or her answer your basic questions, and let us know if you need help understanding or need help choosing among the options the electrician offers to you. That said, forum rules require me to close this thread.
