We have been asked to put a number on a genset for a 1200A 3? meter stack with eight meters. We told the customer that with this design, the meters would spin under genny power and POCO would collect for power they did not supply.

Any code violations here? Any ideas short of a total service rebuild?

FWIW customer says no to eight separate gennys.

I can not think of any NEC violations I bet you have some POCO issues.

No on eight gen sets but how about providing a price on eight ATS as a possible alternate?

FPL has a meter that shuts off when the generator is providing power. A communication cable that goes from the ATS to each meter. You should call and ask the meter shop supervisor.

Free money for them.

I believe that would be a violation of law. I don't think they would let you set them up for that.

That is cool but wow, they would give an EC the ability to stop and start the meters at will? I wonder how that works, there must be some sort of security measures taken.

I'm having the same issues with a commercial job that has 6 meters, 5-400 amp 480 and one 200 amp 480. One-one meg genny They do not own the building, but lease all of it. They want to be able to meter the space that they don't use if they downsize or move part of their operations elsewhere. I'm having to install six four pole T-switches on the back side of the wall of the service. With a meter stack, you would not be able to do this. Sounds like you have your work cut out for you. Intercepting the feeders after the meter stack would be the only other option, though if it's like most, it's probably next to impossible. Some of our local POCO's will lease a genny to the customer ahead of the meter, but that cuts you out of the money, unless your doing the install for them.

meter probably only stops if gen input is on AND incoming power is lost

and if not, i have a patent app to go fill out

Again, I thank John for the heads up.

Glad to help. I spent many hours in meetings with the tenant, and utility only to find out that this was in Beta form at the time.
I ended up with a 20k change order to work around the program. It would have only cost about 6 or 8k to do the meter bypass but FPL just couldn't support it at the time.
