A buddy called me yesterday and said he got wrote up on a Large Pull Box that was installed for feeders. It was for a strait pull without a splice. I thought wow, dumb mistake, but then he told me the inspector counted the 8 times the diameter from where the fittings ended inside the box. 2" emt connector with a plastic bushing on the end sticks into the box a little bit. I was dumb founded and it took my breath away! I guess I have many, many installations that don't meet code!! He was really bumbed because it was going to take a bit of work as you guys can imagine to fix the situation. I feel bad for him as well, because I would have been in the exact boat.
Just trying to help other people out, hopefully everybody else has read the this article and has gotten it right!

Re: OOPS 314.28 Pull Boxes

Large boxes can be tricky. The worst part is doing the math for an angle or U pull. You can do the math right and buy the right box, but if you punch it wrong, you get a red-tag! :D

Re: OOPS 314.28 Pull Boxes

Your friend should not change the box.

314.28 Pull and Junction Boxes and Conduit Bodies.
Boxes and conduit bodies used as pull or junction boxes shall comply with 314.28(A) through (D).
Exception: Terminal housings supplied with motors shall comply with the provisions of 430.12.
(A) Minimum Size. For raceways containing conductors of 4 AWG or larger, and for cables containing conductors of 4 AWG or larger, the minimum dimensions of pull or junction boxes installed in a raceway or cable run shall comply with the following. Where an enclosure dimension is to be calculated based on the diameter of entering raceways, the diameter shall be the metric designator (trade size) expressed in the units of measurement employed.
(1) Straight Pulls. In straight pulls, the length of the box shall not be less than eight times the metric designator (trade size) of the largest raceway.
The section requires the length of the box shall be eight times the diameter, not the distance between raceways.

IMO the inspector is reading the section wrong.
