Wow, its been months since Ive posted on the forum. Well Ill get back into it with an old question. I posted a topic a year and a half ago asking about open bottom junction boxes and whan type of locations they are. Iwire responded and stated that they are not addressed by the NEC and thus stuff in them must be suitable for direct bury. We have a situation where this issue has come up and the more I think about it, I am not convinced that since the NEC does not mention these boxes, that stuff in them must be suitable for direct bury. Would anyone like to elaborate on how that conclusion is drawn? Why would it not be a wet location? Nothing is buried, and the box has a cover. The specific situation and question is a transformer pad that use to have a utility transfomer sitting on it, but some things were moved around and now the pad is being used as a junction box - thwn stubs out of the incoming pvc, is spliced and then goes into the outgoing pvc. Are these conductors code compliant sitting loose in the bottom of the pad or do they need to be wrestled into a pvc box?

Marc,

I am not sure whether the transformer pad is listed, or what its listing is. I'll look for a stamp on it tomorrow.

Pierre,

What does 314.30 state, is that new for the '05 cycle? I don't see it in my '02 book.
