I know there is some reference in the NEC to open splices but can't find it. I am specifically looking for the prohibition on making a splice without some sort of listed box or protection device (besides a wire nut). Thanks.

Are these splices on conductors of power or lighting circuits?

I agree with 480sparky's reference for gerneral wiring, but class 2 and 3 circuits as well as communiction circuits aren't required to meet the requirements of 300.15 unless specifically referenced in their related Articles.

Just thought I would put that out there.;)

Along with the other comments I will mention that open splices are allowed on power circuits on construction sites. 590.4(G).

Didn't get fined, but was told they needed to be in a jbox. It was only one splice, so it was easier to get out a 1900 & cover.
