Working on a 3 story senior living facility. Found out that Architect designed the ceilings to be smoke separation barriers. Architect is telling me that per IBC 2015 714.4.4 penetrations in smoke barriers need to comply with UL 1479. Well they also want several light fixtures on the ceiling which means I need to put up light boxes in the ceiling. I can't find a box with a UL1479 rating. Anyone face this issue before and what was the solution?

3M putty pads would probably work or 5 siding each box with the same material (sheetrock) the membrane is. You could also contact 3M, Hilti, or any other fire protection manufacturer, they like making sales and in my experience they are easy to work with.

Thank you for the suggestion. Do you have a suggested means to putty a box when a gypboard ceiling is already up?

I'm pretty sure they can be applied from the inside and still be within their listing instructions.
