I have an electrical room with panelboards stacked one right above the other and a transformer jammed between panels. Has anyone seen a situation like this? Seems like art. 110 is ignored. This is a commercial build.

Around here the local schools use the electrical rooms as storage space. They are filled with unused desk, carpet. paper products. When I ask the maintenance supervisor if the Fire Marshal was OK with this he informed me that they get written up every year. My reply was " looks like it's doing a lot of good ". I am surprised when I don't see violations in electrical rooms.

Yep, thats usually what I see. Electrical closet filled with storage items. Usually takes at least 15 minutes just to pull enough stuff out into the hallway to get in there.
However, just a few days ago, I walked into a potential customers building to look at a possible generator installation project. His electrical closet was totally void of any non electrical items. The floor was waxed, the panels and switchgear were shiny and dust free. I nearly keeled over!!!!

Unless that was a brand new installation, you should have taken a picture. I don't ever recall having seen anything like that! :D

WE encountered a situation in a car dealer where they had stacked old car batteries in front of the main electrical panels.

I tired to tell them about the Code requirements of working space clearances and the dangers of old batteries oozing hydrogen gas and those circuit breakers right there that can produce a spark or 3 ....

Needless to say, we declined to do any work there until they cleaned out the electrical room (never happened, BTW).

While the place never "blew up" and appeard on the 6 PM news, they eventually went belly-up and out of business. Didn't surprise me, with their could-care-less attitude about certain things.....

you mean you are not supposed to fill every inch of space in an electrical closet with stuff? I thought that was the standard way to keep unauthorized personnel out.
