Hello everyone,

I've never used the optional calculation for multi-famliy dwellings, so I am not 100% sure this is correct. Here's the situation:
34 apartments @ 846 sq. ft. with the following equip:
2 small appliance circuit
1 laundry circuit
12 KW range
5 KW dryer
1500 W A/C
1200 W A/C
4000 W water heater
NO HEATING LOADS

So far I have 366,723VA without house loads.

House Load = 11520 VA

TOTAL = 378,243 VA according to Part II of art. 220

My interpretation of 220.32 is the following
994,092 VA's in the appartments, plus 11,520 VA house loads for a grand total of 1,005,612 @ 30% = 301,683.60 VA. Does this sound right?

Re: OPTIONAL MULTI-FAMILY DWELLING 220.32

Just to be clear, the 994,092 come from 220.32(C)
34 * 1500 * 2 = 102,000 small appliances
34 * 846 * 3 = 86,292 light & recept.
34 * 12000 = 408,000 (12KW range)
34 * 5000 = 170,000 (5KW dryer)
34 * 4000 = 136,000 (4KW water heater)
34 * 1500 = 51,000 (1.5KW A/C)
34 * 1200 = 40,800 (1.2KW A/C)

Re: OPTIONAL MULTI-FAMILY DWELLING 220.32

I'll be honest, I didn't check any of this.

But how in tarnation did you come up with:
994,092 VA's in the appartments, plus
A million + watts?

Re: OPTIONAL MULTI-FAMILY DWELLING 220.32

molotov27,
Optional calculations are used with electrical space heating demand factors. Is this solar?
Look up 230.2(A)conditions 1,2,& 3. (Multi-family)

Re: OPTIONAL MULTI-FAMILY DWELLING 220.32

I'm sorry, it must be the 34 apt.s, maybe if I paid attention. I thought you were getting that for 1 unit.

Re: OPTIONAL MULTI-FAMILY DWELLING 220.32

gndrod....I read conditions 1, 2 & 3. I have to say that we meet all three of them, unless condition #3 referes to central A/C. The units do not have heating. However there are two small A/C units, one of 1200W and one of 1500W installed on 2 separate rooms.

Don't worry physis...we all make mistakes like that jaja.

So, now...how does the optional calculations sound?

Re: OPTIONAL MULTI-FAMILY DWELLING 220.32

This is what I get for your first post.

3 * 846 * 34 = 86,292 sq.ft.
2 * 1,500 * 34 = 102,000 small app.
1 * 1,500 * 34 = 51,000 laundry
4,000 * 34 = 136,000 water heater
5,000 * 34 = 170,000 dryer
12,000 * 34 = 408,000 range
I added the 2 a/c values together?
2,700 * 34 = 91,800 a/c

Total = 1,045,092 * 30% per table 220.32 = 313,528

Add house load 313,528 + 11,520 = 325,048

220.32(B) The demand factor is not applied to the house loads.

Edit: I don't see your laundry circuit in your second post.

I'm actually way to lazy to do this but I figured since I opened my big mouth and stuck my foot in it this would be my punishment. :D

Re: OPTIONAL MULTI-FAMILY DWELLING 220.32

Does anybody know why the bathroom isn't counted.

Edit: Maybe it is, 220.32(C) sends you on a wild goose chase for small appliance circuits, I just got tired of flipping pages.

You might want to make sure they're not included or include them anyway for another 15.3k.
