does the code have any requirements how far a generator can be installed away from a building, gas entrance, roadway, etc.

No codes that I am aware of as far as distance from a building, unless you get into local codes. We install gensets anywhere from 2-10 ft from a structure, depending on how much clearence the machine needs, and have put it as close as a foot. No problems to this point from an inspector. (Remember to allow for air intake and heat and exhaust discharge) I do not know any exact code concerning gas, but we require 10' from a fuel tank, but have been told 5' is acceptable.

Last one I did, a 16Kw, had no rear vents or discharge. The instructions state to space according to local requirements, and the inspectors (both electrical and plumbing) said to space according to instructions.

While everyone with an opinion said three feet was traditional, those who matteres had no problem with our final 10" of space, as the HO wanted it as close as possible, since it's on the side of the house.
