Any advice for someone about to take the Oregon journeymans test?
I am going thru application process now, but wanted to know of anything special to look for on their test?
I have the Mike Holt materials to study at home.
Thanks, Sparks :)

1. Make sure you take your Uglys and your Tom Henry's Key Word Index.

2. Make sure your familiar in calculating AFC by taking your voltage and divide by impedance (I had no fewer than 4 on each of my supervisor exams I took recently in the code portion.) I wrote the formula on page 60 of Uglys above the xfmr info.

3. Get familiar with Article 500 and above (again both exams had a lot of communication, PV and class 2 & 3 cable questions)

4. Your instructor should have taught you already but I'll repeat what I have been told in any class. Read all the questions first. Answer the no-brainers you know for sure without looking them up. Then go thru again and do the ones you know you can find quickly. Lastly do the tough ones that might take a while to find but never spend too much time on one question and never leave one unanswered (guess if you have to if you run out of time)

Good luck

Journeymans license

Journeymans license

I am assuming you have been through your apprenticeship and 4 years of schooling which should have given you a very good idea of what you are doing. The prior years leading up to and being accepted are normally the best source of what you need to have prepared for. Knowing NEC and being able to quickly find an article in the NEC is key. Being able to do calculations on the obvious that pertains in being a Journeyman in Oregon. It was over 20 years ago for me and back then it was taking the test while you were fresh out of your 4th year of school and your required 8000 hours of on the job work. There is no magic but its about how hard you worked with studying an knowing the NEC. When taking the exam, if you get stuck on a question, move on and come back to it after you have completed the ones you know quickly. You only have an so much time to complete. Good luck.

Glock, thanks for the tips,
I looked up pg. 60 of the Uglys book is the "AFC" you are talking about the available fault current calculation?
I will make sure I cover those, its been a number of years since I have taken a electricians test.
I am kind of starting over again , I Have been doing multifamily inspections 10 yrs. and electrical side jobs.
thanks , sparks
