Jill Jonnes's compelling Empires of Light: Edison, Tesla, Westinghouse, and the Race to Electrify the World offers a multi-sided tale of America's turn-of-the-20th-century quest for cheap, reliable electrical power.

I recommend this book wholeheartly. You can read about the man who invented inductions motors, polyphase power, and more... THEN come argue about "single-phase" if you wish...
