I've been looking for some time, and have had some reasons to look for somewhere else to go.

I have had the good fortune to get hired on at a good local commercial shop, as a commercial apprentice. I quietly PM'ed some folks about it, and received many heartwarming and encouraging replies. I feel good about this change, and am looking forward to a new learning experience, working toward my ultimate goal of ruling the universe.

Anyway, just thought I would thank everyone who replied, and thanks to Jim for putting in a good word for me, and thanks to everyone here, whose company keeps me learning and on my toes, and has set me up for success in this new venture. I won't fall into a list, and in fact I'd hate for anyone I missed in the volley of PM's I sent to believe they'd contributed any less to my education. I thought of 15 more people on the road later on I wanted to tell.

Now, I need to study up and find a cheap car in a hurry! :)

I saw a early 1980's Ford LTD in excellent condition the other day. All the bells & whistles. Only problem is it has a 460 motor but wanted only $400 :D

Congrats on your career move. I'm sure you can handle the challenge. :)

Good Luck George!!!

I recall my big career moves form residential to commercial/industrial to contractor and now inspector with instructor mixed in.

I think you are on a great path! Keep up the good work!

Well, I have an '85 Chevy S10 4x4 Blazer that I installed a small block 350 into, two years ago. I don't want to drive it because it gets around 10 MPG and leaks oil and ATF like a sieve. I'm not good with oil pan gaskets. :(

I converted it to a 5.7 when the 2.8 threw a rod. In my infinite wisdom, I thought that since I'd have to use the throttle less, it would get better gas mileage than it did when it was in the full size pickup. Boy, was I wrong!

It's a blast to drive, I just can't afford the gas. :D

Hey George, (Former Housemonkey), congrats!!!!

My offer still stands, just move to the right coast!!

I think you'll pick up the commercial work just fine. Now go grab a bundle of 1" Rigid and carry it up to the 5th floor. :)

Transitions, resume pounding, and being on the hot seat for production quota's may be a place few wan't to languish at, or deal with.

Hostile environments may screw themselves by not providing clear paths to promotion, and by brooming out their investment in people who would shorten the learning curve for others.

Unfortunately, if the worker is not family, their heads must roll. Owners will avoid brooming valuable employees towared competitors, or toward legal self-employment in direct competition with themselves, but without any leverage --dependance on their unique skills-- leaching off payrolls must be justified by some comparative advantage.

Employee's are "at will" expendable, like a piece of meat, and whatever they bring to the table better be tasty.

Without superior skills, the best tools are endentured servatude, without attitude. If you are asked to lead in workplaces often governed by human nature, it cannot be done without humiliating weakness in front of the crew, and periodically gutting out that week link in bloody glory for all to see.

I'd like to believe each time I get gutted from commercial-union crews, the stronger and more determined I become. I am discovering enough common code shortcuts to keep the inspectors busy for a lifetime.

Funny you should have posted something on changing jobs. I too have been trying to decide on whether to take a position with a company who has an industrial complex here and they have made me an offer that I am having a hard time refusing. I enjoy running my own business and lately have been so busy that I hardly have enough time for myself or my family. As the days go on and I think about it more and more, I get these impatient customers who feel that they are the only people on the face of this earth and that I am to drop what I am doing just to kiss their, well you know. But they are few and definately are outnumbered by the good ones. It boils down to me doing what I think is right for me and not doing what is right for the customer, who in this case is not right. I will still keep my company and still have my customers and just say to them that what makes America great are four little words..." In God We Trust".

I, like the rest, am happy and exited for you George. Unlike the rest though, I get to be lucky enough to haveyou showing up at the shop I work for Monday AM. Looking forward to it and welcome aboard.

I'm wishing you well, too George. You will be an asset to any company. And look at all the new topics we will have to look forward to with your posts!
