Re: OT, New Computer Mods delete if nec.

Dell makes a good computer and I recommend the same as hardworkingstiff ?business on separate computers.?
I have a Pentium 4 processor, 512 MB RAM that integrates well with QuickBooks, AutoCAD (RAM should be more than 512 for AutoCAD but I get by), various bidding software and Windows XP Professional. Make sure you buy Windows XP Professional it will keep you compatible with most other users and it has all the basic, necessary, software you will need.

Thanks guys. Most likely the new machine will be for me and the kids will use the current one. I have spent alot of time on the Dell site and I think I will order soon.

Re: OT, New Computer Mods delete if nec.

Dell's support is outsourced in India - different culture and a lot of misunderstanding.

Re: OT, New Computer Mods delete if nec.

Thanks for the input. I went with a lower end Dell. If the kids destroy it no huge loss. I'll use my current machine for my work until I get myself something with all the goodies. :D

I use and recommend Tiger Direct for computers and peripherals.

Check out their site and you'll likely find some great bargains, especially if you don't mind factory reconditioned equipment (which does come with a warranty.)

Here's a few more helpful sites: Gateway, IBM

I really do hate scrolling around these sites but I had these left over from a computer science class I took last year. I would by a computer this way. I do recommend buying it with your needed specifications and these types of sites can assist, do not custom build one we did this a few times for our company and I won't bother doing it again.

Re: OT, New Computer Mods delete if nec.

I built the last three computers for our office and they did well for the time but were outdated so the next round we installed all Dell's and went for the extra 5 year warranty and the $59.00 insurance that covers the computer from any kind of damage, lightning strike, surge's, over voltage, coffee spill anything. I could not provide that kind of service and we have used the service once when we lost the neutral to the shop at the transformer, Dell was there the next morning, installed the new computer and copied the hard drive. And formated the one in the damage machine so no info was left on it. and since we have the gold package (warranty) we have a direct number to call with a code to go directly to dell's tech department. The extra warranty cost a little more but it is worth every dime of it. The girls even got a little carried away and cranked up a CD (music) and blew out the sub woofer, they sent a new one no questions asked.
I have found their service to be 2nd to none. Probably why they are #1 in computers.

Re: OT, New Computer Mods delete if nec.

Depends on how the formatting was done. A "Deep Format," or at least that is the term I remember from the time I had to do it on one of my machines, obliterates everything on the drive. Nothing that was once on that drive can be retreived thereafter.

Re: OT, New Computer Mods delete if nec.

Charlie,

I think you are thinking of the term "low level format." Not sure how well this worked for destroying data, but it was used back in the day for setting up a new drive.

The best way to get rid of data is to utilize a program that writes several times over the data, formating is not the recommended method if you have sensative data that needs to be destroyed.

Re: OT, New Computer Mods delete if nec.

Everything depends on how secret the info is.Writing over it is only good way.And a few of us no how to get in the back door past your password. For what it worth i would have kept the hard drive.Hard drives are getting very cheap, about 50 cents a GB.Personally i prefer to build my own.Above all be sure to set up an administator password. That stops a lot of hackers. Also watch out for USB keys.Someone could steal tons of info if your back was turned for a few minutes.

Re: OT, New Computer Mods delete if nec.

Might add that if possable keep records and bids on a seperate computer with no internet connection. And back up files often.A back up copy should be kept someplace in case of fire or another Katrina

Re: OT, New Computer Mods delete if nec.

Go Dell, and buy the extended warranty, After two years, I had a glitch on my desktop, asked the 24 hour service rep for a new one, and they sent it to me. I have had nothing but good service from Dell. :)

Re: OT, New Computer Mods delete if nec.

If you do go Dell just be sure they give you a CD with xp and the password along with all other drivers. Not sure but heard of a customers not getting them. Also xp pro is lot safer for buisness. After warranty runs out you will need the discs.

Re: OT, New Computer Mods delete if nec.

Buy from your local computer store. I support the local business because because it is better for our community. Also when I have a problem I can understand what they are saying. Not to mention that when they found out the nature of my business they have given my business cards out and I have done work for them. How many of you guys have been to India on a service call? Think about it. And people wonder why we are losing jobs?
