Other compatible electrical wire for power

Need to install dedicated 120V, 20 amp power source for equipment and standard US AWG power cables are not available(in Japan)but have access to local products that may be compatible for the purpose. The requirement says to use #12AWG with "THHN" rated insulation. Is there such a table or chart that identifies compatible foreign electrical products to US standard electrical products? If there is, can someone support this request for such information so I can insure the installation meets specifications as required?

Thank you,

Re: Other compatible electrical wire for power

THHN is a nylon jacketed wire ith a thermoplastic insulation rated for 90deg C.

#12AWG is typically used for 20A circuits.

You should be able to find something suitable.

The reason a specific wire is specified has to do with US electrical codes, and does not mean thats the only wire that would work.

Re: Other compatible electrical wire for power

many years ago i was an electrician on a nuclear submarine and we somehow burnt up a section of bus in a switchboard feeding our reactor's coolant pumps. this limited us to reactor power output. i found we had in our stock two rolls of #12 appliance cable for replacement purposes for our cooking ranges. i calculated the size of the copper bus based on 1000 amps per square inch. then built a jumper out of parallel runs of number 12 appliance wires---added a few for safety, taped it up and installed it---no problem! you have to improvize---your computer spec calls for a dedicated circuit of 20 amps--it's not going to use twenty amps!

While they may not market it there, but several Japanese manufacturers make THHW/THHN wire.

Go to this web page and enter "Japan" as the country and "THHW" as the keyword. It will return at lease 5 manufacturers.

THHW and THHN are virtually identical for manufacturing purposes and most manufacturers will mark the wire both ways.

Re: Other compatible electrical wire for power

I don't think we are understanding your question correctly. WHERE is this installation? If it is in Japan the installation should be to the current codes where you are which would require the use of wire and materials that are available there.

Apparently the equipment you are installing is American made and the instructions reflect American products. This doesn't mean that you have to use American wire to supply the equipment you are installing in Japan.

I'm sure you can find an electrical contractor there that can install a 120V/20A circuit with an American receptacle. That's all that matters.
