If a GFI receptacle is installed in a screened in outdoor porch at the rear of a single family home.Does it meet the requirement of section 210.52(E). Or is an additional GFI outlet required outside the screened in area. Thank you in advance for any responses.

Re: Outdoor GFI receptacles.

What part of Florida are you in ????One county here says no way in a locked screen porch not a required outlet that is accesible.has to be one outside the birdcage too.

Re: Outdoor GFI receptacles.

I am in central Florida . The code does not state locked or unlocked screened porch it states rear of single family home.Is the accessibility of the receptacle for the home owner who can lock or unlock the door or for others who might need the use of the receptacle.

Re: Outdoor GFI receptacles.

:D The written language is open to interpretation and the AHJ has the final word. However, I believe article 210-52 (5)(e) is specifically titled Outdoor Outlets and then elaborates in regards to a receptacle required at the front and back of the dwelling. Following this paragraph is a reference to Article 210-8 (a)(3) which requires receptacles installed outdoors to be GFCI protected for personnel. To me, an enclosed locked and most likely finished porch is not outside and would not require GFCI protection.
Then again, we are all entitled to our opinions and I am not an inspector or THE inspector on your job. Good luck!!!

Re: Outdoor GFI receptacles.

Me,I live and do most of my work in Pasco county but Hernando county inspector last week tagged a job we took over from another EC tagged the final for this.Line sided the gfi and got the meter release easier than fighting it at that point.Since we have taken 3 sub divisions over I plan to get with the AHJ soon to see whats up ;)

Re: Outdoor GFI receptacles.

I have to side with the interpretation that if the porch is enclosed, then receptacles in there do not satisfy 210.52(E). What if I don't have an enclosed back porch and I want to count the one just inside my back door? How would that be functionally any different in terms of serving the back yard area than a receptacle on an enclosed porch? I think (but I don't have any evidence to back it up) that the requirement might have something to do with not wanting to have the extension cord used for something outdoors, getting damaged by the door closing on it. The enclosed porch does have a door?

Re: Outdoor GFI receptacles.

The locking devise was a screen door lock. That was the whole premise for my reply.NOT ACCESIBLE unless it was unlocked, the NEC doesn`t say it has to be unlocked but it has to be there
and what constitutes accesible ?does the NEC say it has to be accesible?Yes it does.210.52 E

Re: Outdoor GFI receptacles.

Again i would like to say the question of accessability to the home owner or someone other than the home owner. If the home owner needs to use the receptacle he opens the screen door which has a safety latch on it to keep the door open. Plugs in his extension cord does his yard work and then unplugs his cord and closes his door. This receptacle in my opinion is accessible to the home owner even though it is in enclosed screen porch.
